A SLDPRT file is a single SOLIDWORKS part: the exact solid — true planes, cylinders and splines — plus its feature history, sketches, material and custom properties. It is proprietary, so nothing else on your machine may open it. Assemblies are SLDASM files. One SLDPRT can hold several bodies, and those should stay separate when converting.

Can I open a newer SLDPRT in an older SOLIDWORKS?
Yes, for parts. Choose Older SLDPRT: SOLIDWORKS 2025 and 2024 get a native part as one body, no feature tree; 2023 and older get a STEP. Most keep the part's own surfaces, and the conversion says when yours did not.
Can I get the geometry back into CAD?
Yes. Convert to STEP, which Fusion 360, Inventor, Onshape, SOLIDWORKS, Creo and FreeCAD open directly — usually with the part's own surfaces, and it says when they had to be rebuilt.
