To convert 3DM to OBJ, drop the Rhino .3dm into the converter below and download the .obj. Every visible object comes through as its own named object: polysurfaces, extrusions, surfaces, meshes and the contents of blocks, NURBS meshed to within 0.02 mm. 5 conversions a day are free with no account, and no Rhino licence is needed. If you have Rhino, Export Selected as OBJ does this too, with its own meshing settings.

NURBS surfaces and extrusions are tessellated, existing meshes taken directly and SubD objects meshed from their smooth surface, in millimetres, one object per Rhino object where the OBJ format keeps objects apart. Trimmed boundaries and holes keep their silhouettes.
A 3DM is a Rhino document: NURBS polysurfaces, extrusions, meshes, curves, blocks, layers and materials side by side. An OBJ is a set of polygon meshes. Converting turns each NURBS face into triangles, no more than 0.02 mm off, takes mesh objects as they are, and places every block instance where it sits.
Each Rhino object becomes one named object in the OBJ, so Blender and KeyShot list them separately. Layers, Rhino materials, render settings, curves and dimensions stay in the 3DM, and the result says how many curves and annotations it left.
What you see in Rhino is what converts. Hidden objects and objects on hidden layers are left out and counted, so show them first if you want them. A linked block, whose geometry lives in another file, is named in the result rather than skipped. The model unit is applied, so an inch or metre model arrives in millimetres; OBJ itself has no unit, so Blender users in metres scale by 0.001 on import.
A 3DM file is a Rhino model. Rhino is a NURBS modeller, dominant in industrial design, jewellery, marine and architecture. A 3DM can mix exact breps, surfaces, meshes and curves on layers; polysurfaces and extrusions convert exactly, and mesh objects come along: as meshes in a mesh format, rebuilt as true surfaces in a solid one.
A designer works in Rhino and engineering or manufacturing needs the shape in a format their system reads.
OBJ is a plain-text mesh format from graphics. Unlike STL it keeps named groups, texture coordinates, materials and polygon faces, which makes it the usual handover into rendering and texturing tools. It is still a mesh, not a solid.
The destination is a renderer, game engine, texturing tool or visualisation pipeline.
Keep the part open: fill it with a lattice, check it with FEA, texture a surface, or slice it into cut-ready sheets. These workspaces are in early access — create an account, then apply from inside the app.
