To convert SLDASM to 3DM, drop the .sldasm into the converter below and download a .3dm that Rhino 7 and later open: the whole assembly, every shown component in place, as one mesh object in millimetres. That is right for reference, rendering, layout and presentation. Assemblies of up to 5 parts need no account. If you need NURBS to model against, convert the assembly to STEP instead and import that into Rhino.

The SLDASM geometry is written into the 3DM file as a triangle mesh in millimetres, which Rhino opens, measures and exports normally.
For editable NURBS surfaces in Rhino, convert to STEP instead.
A SLDASM records parts, their positions and the mates between them; Rhino works in NURBS surfaces, curves and meshes on layers. This conversion gives Rhino the assembled shape as a mesh: every visible component placed where the assembly put it, joined into one mesh object.
A mesh is a good fit for many Rhino jobs: rendering in Rhino or KeyShot, laying a product into a scene, checking clearances by eye, or drawing new surfaces against it. It is a poor fit for editing the parts themselves, because Rhino sees triangles, not the faces of the original. For that, STEP is the better route: Rhino imports it as polysurfaces, with holes as true cylinders.
What stays behind: mates, part names, the parts' feature trees and configurations, colours, and a layer per component. Hidden and suppressed components are left out. Assemblies saved before SOLIDWORKS 2015 convert too, when the file says where every part sits.
A SLDASM file is a SOLIDWORKS assembly: parts positioned by the mates that constrain them. Sent with its SLDPRT files, the whole product converts as one and component names are kept. An assembly that stores its components’ shapes converts on its own too, every component placed where it sits — as a mesh, or as a solid whose surfaces are rebuilt from those stored shapes.
Someone sent you a whole product and you need it in a neutral format your CAD system, renderer or printer takes.
A 3DM file is a Rhino model. Rhino is a NURBS modeller, dominant in industrial design, jewellery, marine and architecture. A 3DM can mix exact breps, surfaces, meshes and curves on layers; polysurfaces and extrusions convert exactly, and mesh objects come along: as meshes in a mesh format, rebuilt as true surfaces in a solid one.
A designer works in Rhino and engineering or manufacturing needs the shape in a format their system reads.
Keep the part open: fill it with a lattice, check it with FEA, texture a surface, or slice it into cut-ready sheets. These workspaces are in early access — create an account, then apply from inside the app.
