BREP is OpenCASCADE's native shape format — not an interchange standard, but the most faithful way to hand exact geometry to FreeCAD, CadQuery or other OpenCASCADE tools. For mainstream CAD, use STEP.
A .brep file is what FreeCAD, CadQuery, build123d and other tools built on OpenCASCADE write when they save a shape exactly as that kernel holds it: faces on exact surfaces, edges on exact curves, and how they join. Nothing is lost on the way out, but almost nothing outside that family reads it back in, which is why people convert it.
Both encodings are read, the text form most tools write and the binary form some newer ones use. A BREP records no unit, no colours and no names; its numbers are read as millimetres, the convention in those tools, so a model scripted in metres needs scaling.
To STEP, IGES or BREP the conversion is exact: the same surfaces, nothing tessellated. STEP is the one to send anybody outside OpenCASCADE, since nearly every CAD, CAM and inspection program reads it. To STL, 3MF, OBJ or another mesh, the faces are triangulated to within 0.02 mm, and that route can run in your browser, so the file never leaves your machine. To SLDPRT or Parasolid the shape becomes a solid body that SOLIDWORKS, Solid Edge and NX open.
You are feeding a shape into FreeCAD, CadQuery or your own OpenCASCADE code.
